The Wolf Moon is the first full moon of the year in January. This image of the Wolf Moon in January 2023 was taken as the full moon was beginning to set to the north of Mount Redoubt (volcano)/Southwestern Alaska/Alaska Peninsula/Winter/Wolf Moon/Digital
Behind the Image
This morning opened with clear skies and I knew that today was the Wolf Moon. So, I thought I would give it a try in trying to photograph it.
The moonset was after 11 am and so I left Homer at just before 9:30 and headed north. The scenic viewpoint that I would use is about 30 miles or so north of Homer.
When I arrived at the scenic pullout, the snow berms had been piled up to probably close to five feet in height. Additionally, I wanted to get closer to the cliff as it is probably 300 feet or more away from the parking area and getting closer would allow me to include Cook Inlet in the foreground of the image.
Between the parking area and the cliff were varying amounts snow. The first area I tried, the snow was probably crotch deep but at another spot the snow was shallower and I was able to hike out to get closer to the edge.
During this time, Mt. Illiamna was pinking up nicely from the rising sun with Mt. Redoubt following but because I was still in the parking area and still had to hike out, I would lose out on the peak of the sweet light.
